Most PhD students are too hard on themselves. They can spend long hours soldiering through no matter what often sleep-deprived and caffeine-fueled. Balancing PhD challenges with social obligations and everything else an individual wants to achieve can lead to burn out and mental health issues. The goal of a PhD is to contribute novel knowledge to your field of research, something that is much more challenging if you are not in the right mental, physical or emotional state. Doing a PhD is hard and full of lots of lows and challenges that you need to compete with. So, all of this together just highlights the need to practice self-care as a PhD student.
